Thousands Gather to Protest Brexit
Only days after a tragic attack that left four people dead and many injured, tens of thousands have gathered in Westminster. While the 27 remaining EU member states are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, crowds in London protest the government’s hard Brexit strategy.
One woman discovers Rough Roads Ahead in some of the most remote places on earth.
In past century, humanity has seen more changes to its way of life than ever before in history, and with them new challenges. But what about the most remote communities and those whose way of life hasn’t changed in hundreds of years… or has it?
To find out what it means to live and to be a woman in the remotest corners of our planet, a young scientist turned adventurer leaves behind the frontiers of modern research, for the frontiers of our modern world.
For almost 50 years, a brutal civil war has been going on between the indigenous population of West Papua and the occupying military forces of Indonesia. It has cost the lives of an estimated 600 000 civilians and has displaced many more. Accurate statistics on the conflict however, are hard to come by, since international NGOs are barred from the country, including the Red Cross and United Nations (apart from a few rare exceptions).
The conflict began in 1969, when a commission of 1025 men and women, appointed by the Indonesian armed forces, were tasked to vote on behalf of a native population of almost a million, in favour of giving up the country’s sovereignty. With this so-called “Act of Free Choice”, often referred to as the “Act of No Choice”, the western half of the Papuan island became part of Indonesia. The Malenesian population’s fight for independence has been going on ever since and hundreds of thousands have fled violence, war and oppression across the Fly River, to neighbouring Papua New Guinea.
